I seem to recall reading there’s a town in Japan that regularly puts on a performance of The Mikado, so someone has thought of it. Whether it’s been made into a comic, I don’t know.
There are plenty of manga and anime based on Victorian England and its literature, everything from Lewis Carroll to Jane Austen. Still, the musical theater structure may not be as popular in Japan, and therefore less of a marketable project.
On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some amateur creator in Japan doing Gilbert & Sullivan manga and selling them as a fan project. There’s some crazy doujinshi stuff out there.
(TUNE: “Three Little Maids From School”, Gilbert and Sullivan)
Three little things a princess needs,
Dressed in a gown bedecked with beads,
There’s nothing else that supersedes
Three little princess needs!
First is a smiling and lovely face;
Second, a bearing of poise and grace;
Thirdly is not getting past first base!
Princess exam you’ll ace!
Three little needs for Princess Whimsy,
Dressed in a gown so light and flimsy!
Nick is the one, so we must make him see …
Three little princess needs!
Three little PRIN-cess needs!
(TUNE: I’ve Got A Little List, Gilbert and Sullivan)
As some day it might happen that I get a chance to moan,
I’ve got a little list, I’ve got a list,
Of situations at Skin Horse that really make me groan,
And mean that I am hissed, seriously hissed.
There’s the cross-dressing shrink who gets more action than I could,
Having to spend hours with a buzzsaw chopping wood,
Marcie smirking about my chats with Ginny Lee again,
While Unity sits drooling at the case that holds my brain,
All the proper paperwork on which Sweetheart will insist,
And it all makes me quite hissed! I’m getting really hissed!
CHORUS: He’s got them on the list! He’s got them on the list!
They make him really pissed! They make him really pissed!
Now I’m chosen as a princess, ‘cos everyone knows that I’m “pure”,
And assume I’ve not been kissed, I’ve got that on the list!
Wearing a dress and tiara, I think you can be sure,
That’s going on the list! It really makes me hissed!
And it leads to many other things that drive me round the bend,
Being acompanied by zombified animal friends,
Willkins trying to tell me that I look good in a skirt,
Having to learn the lyrics of W.S. Gilbert,
And probably a hundred other things that I have missed,
It all goes on the list! It all goes on the list!
CHORUS: It all goes on the list! It all goes on the list!
And it makes him really pissed! It makes him really pissed!
Aren’t all those critters also Unity? Will she remember what they went through when her stuff comes back home? Can she play Madrox the Multiple Man with hobos?
I guess this one is lost one me… looked up The Mikado, so I understand now what that is… but not fitting the pieces together as to why it is (humorously) important to being a princess.
It’s presumably the only thing Sweetheart knows that’s a musical involving princesses. It’s saying she’s a bureaucratic fuddy duddy with no inner child, kind of like that offhand comment from The West Wing where the president asks his chief of staff if he was born at age 55.
It is ostensibly a satire of royalty, feudal law, and beauracracy. The female characters are all heavily objectified. Therefore CLEARLY…Yeah I got nonidea either. Maybe the wiki is just very poorly written and I’m missing some hugely obvious (to someone who actually knows the work) subtext or context.
Shout-out to Daibhid C.: Nice one!
I know the Mikado inside-out, and am not sure how it applies to princess-hood, but at least these are finally songs I recognize. (Well, I’m old, what do you want from me?)
Now let’s see if I’ve figured out how to post this. . . .
“The Mikado” is one of the most famous Gilbert and Sullivan operas (at least in this era). There’s a version with Eric Idle that you may be able to find in pieces on YouTube or some other (legal) internet source, to give you a sense of it. But it’s not as directly related to this plot as, say, the songs from “Cinderella” or “Beauty and the Beast.”
G&S in Skin Horse: It’s too much happiness! And the whole “civil service functionary” theme echo is just extra delicious! So in SH, who is Pooh-Bah and who Pish-Tush? And could Nick even say “Pish-Tush”?
Also, there are Other Things i should be doing, but my brain now will not stop trying to filk. “If you want to know what we do/We serve non-human sentients”; And OMG but “Here’s a how-de-do” is definitely ‘on my list’ 🙂
Reading many of people’s comments lately, I’m really starting to wonder if knowing nothing about Gilbert & Sullivan is leaving me at a slight disadvantage….
I’m sure there is an E-version of Emily Post by now – other than the dress (poise can be practiced to achieve muscle memory in a virtual environment – since his muscles are artificial) he should be doing this Matrix style. Instantly knowing Kung Fu.
Nick should have tea with the slime mold sometime.
Why would he want to have tea with Fred?
Project runway take a lesson! Booyah!
Somehow, I can’t imagine Tim Gunn’s reaction to Unity.
“Okay people, two more hours!”
“Thanks, Tim! I just have to puke on a couple more woodland creatures.”
There’s always time to read Manga. Sailor Moon would be appropriate at the moment.
Considering what happened to poor Zoicite, I’m not so sure.
I would be quite entertained by a Japanese take on an English take on a Japan-that’s-really-england-in-disguise.
oddly enough, a (very limited) quick google search doesn’t seem to bring up any Manga based on The Mikado.
Thankfully, that should mean no henatai version either 🙂
[and probably no Rule 34 for The Mikado?]
I firmly intend to produce an anime of The Mikado, just as soon as I find out how the heck one does so. I have Plans.
Animation costs over $10 000 a minute. So it starts with being able to pony up the cash.
Yeah… I’d be just as happy to convince someone else to produce it. >_>
(Seriously, it’s just something that needs to HAPPEN, one way or another.)
I seem to recall reading there’s a town in Japan that regularly puts on a performance of The Mikado, so someone has thought of it. Whether it’s been made into a comic, I don’t know.
Rule 34 applies to *everything*.
does rule 34 apply to skin horse?

TV Tropes tells me that _The Mikado_ is actually pretty popular in Japan (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/YMMV/TheMikado) so one would think that there is some kind of manga out there.
Hmmm, can his coptor-body sing duets with himself, or are the speakers slaved together?
Mikado…does this mean we have Gilbert & Sullivan sign on?
Given how Sweetheart resorts to it to make a point, yes. Apparently she can do at least Pirates of Penzance and the Mikado.
My guess is she knows all 14 by heart.
It’s still Wednesday, and I just noticed that today’s Google Doodle honors Rosalind Franklin (Dave and Helen’s daughter is her half-namesake). Huzzah!
Over 24 hours since the first reports of it. Maybe she gets one day for each helix?
Unca’ Walt is thawing as we speak.
It’s the wedding of Nick-Chop and Lee-Vi, MAD SCI!
…I just realized that Nick is a Chopper.
*Falls to knees*
CUUUUUURSSEEEEEE YOUUUUUUU SHAENOOOOOOOONNNN!!
At least she didn’t set up a straw man argument. And the only lion in the cast is back at Skin Horse.
On the other hand, Unity is stitched together and frequently looking for brains…
Oh, hells yes. “The Mikado with Gunship Accompaniment; A Comic Opera in 2 Acts.”
I see Ralph Fiennes as Pooh-Bah, and Nick as KoKo and YumYum. Of course Tip would be Nanki-Poo and Sweetheart would be Katisha, and UNITY the Mikado.
mnem
I would totes save up for tickets to see this.

Excellent!
I was trying to shoehorn what ended up being “Four little gov’ment employees” into the scansion. I’m glad you took that weight off my shoulders ^_^

Yes, she does remember her experiences from being in other animals.

Ah, right. Going back to UNITY telling Nick that everyone would chip in… makes sense now. I think… :p
Given that Sweetheart was engineered, not born, that comment might be more appropriate than it appears at first glance.
Heavily objectified singing females is sort of a hallmark for certain films revolving around Princesses.
That and the Mikado is hilarious to watch.
You do know most Disney princesses films are musicals . So knowing a song style ala Gibert and Sulivan, or Buzzby Berkley Extravaganza is vital.
Shout-out to Daibhid C.: Nice one!

Now let’s see if I’ve figured out how to post this. . . .
Can someone explain to me what The Mikado is? I only heard of mikado which is a game of picking up sticks (i bet androids have real steady hands).

Bah, no edit *baaaaad*….
Ahem, for the record, I’m not asking for anyone to explain to me *who* they were. I’m just saying I’m not familiar with any of their work.
You’re not the only one.

What’s the title of the book on top of the stack? “D—age”? Where’s Chris Ellmann when we need him?
I think it says “Peerage,” as in Debrett’s, which a princess would surely have to know.
Ah, that would explain the crown logo on the spine as well. Thanks!
Why is he paper reading?
I’m sure there is an E-version of Emily Post by now – other than the dress (poise can be practiced to achieve muscle memory in a virtual environment – since his muscles are artificial) he should be doing this Matrix style. Instantly knowing Kung Fu.
please may I just give a cheer for Sweetheart’s expression in frame 3!
Of course Sweetheart would bring the “well trained” portion of princess-ness to the fold.
