Which is weird, since a cyborg is distinct from a “machine”.
I mean, technically we’re all machines, just some of us are biological. It’s more accurate to refer to “synthetics” or “non-organics” for the ones that aren’t.
But Nick is neither of those things. He’s ultimately a biological organism, even if he does prefer to exist as a total amputee with full body prosthetics.
He identifies as a sapient V-22 whose onboard processor is an organic intelligence, not as a human with a complex prosthesis. Under the circumstances, either one is a reasonable position to take, so no he is not an amputee with a full body prosthesis. He is a sapient V-22 with an organic processor.
Nice memory of lore, Nowall. And the reports were interesting and suggestive.
Virginity is over-rated, anyway. I wish Ginny would simply engulf that young Nick.
Parsival,the young fool.
Instead, they (nerds in general, not specifically Nick and Virginia, or even the Baron) spend all their time in relationships they don’t want to be in, because they don’t feel that they could succeed in the one relationship they really want.
Sooo,…the unfair advantage is that the Baron is still Nick’s friend and is willing to slip Ginny useful information in his typically sleazy manner? o_O
Careful there, Ginny–Baron M’s only promising you seven years of LUCK. Making no promises it will be GOOD luck! Which, now that I think of it, was the point of the “Ringworld” books, wasn’t it?
Point taken and I wish I’d seen your reply before posting again. I’d thought my comment had just gone to The Great Bit Bucket In The Sky and had to be reposted. *^_^*
Well, that’s true with Ringworld. But within Ringworld Engineers I’m willing to bet that she regarded ending up as a Pak Protector as very bad luck indeed! >_>
One thesis was that Lady Luck has no memory—someone like Teela *could* exist, but there was no guarantee of being lucky from that point on. (Or so they believed till events proved that wrong.)
You talk like you were just made this night,
It’s first-rate delusion that you’d think it all right.
And why have you tried that line today?
Baron, you’ve got no chance when you’re talking that way.
The girls all around saying, “Rubbing his what?”
But they all think something when they’re kicking your butt.
You act half-witted when you’re speaking that crap,
Don’t you get their outrage when their hands swing and slap?
Tell them you’re trying to rub them some seven-year luck.
Watch what else their old guts can chuck.
The girls say, “I hope we are auto-immune,”
The guys say, “Who is this stupid goon?”
Everybody tells you but you don’t hear a thing.
You’ve strayed to far from the Whimsey bling.
Server is open, why don’t you give up some ground?
Baron, what is so nice about getting shot down?
Spinning your treads to these Byzantine plots,
You’re stuck on trying to stop offending the bots.
Don’t bother coming to say it’s time to begin.
‘Cause there’s a tool up in the gateway when they try to get in.
Don’t tell us you’re trying to rub them some seven-year luck.
Watch what else their old guts can chuck.

Correction: you fought a vampire sentient virtual pet, that’s a thing that happened.
Remember he identifies as machine
Which is weird, since a cyborg is distinct from a “machine”.

Hey! Skin Horse has a towel to throw in! None of the mecha do, do they?
So Baron M tries another weird way to get his freak on.
What’s she got to lose? Oh, he didn’t say “good luck”…
Yay, Shaenon! 117% subscribed in 24 hours! Don’t forget to banner so the Sunday-Skippers won’t miss out!
She has nothing to lose but her lunch.
Then again, it’s traditional that unicorns can only be handled by virgins. If the field reports were true, Dr. Lee doesn’t qualify.
Perhaps she counts because she’s named “virgin.”
A VINO: “virgin in name only”.
Nice memory of lore, Nowall. And the reports were interesting and suggestive.
Virginity is over-rated, anyway. I wish Ginny would simply engulf that young Nick.
Parsival,the young fool.
Trouble is, she’s just as self-conscious as Nick is. For any number of reasons, neither one of them believes they have a chance with the other.
That’s the trouble with nerd romance: it really is uphill both ways.
If only they would realize that there’s someone they’d rather be doing…
Instead, they (nerds in general, not specifically Nick and Virginia, or even the Baron) spend all their time in relationships they don’t want to be in, because they don’t feel that they could succeed in the one relationship they really want.
Don’t ask me how I know.
KICKSTARTER FULLY FUNDED! Yay, and I hope there will be stretch goals.
Sooo,…the unfair advantage is that the Baron is still Nick’s friend and is willing to slip Ginny useful information in his typically sleazy manner? o_O
Problem is that Baron M wants to slip something else to Dr. Lee. Since he’s an Original Whimsey Character, who could figure out what.
Yeeaaah, I’m not sure what the Baron is up to, but I don’t think “useful” or “beneficial” will be able to describe it.
Careful there, Ginny–Baron M’s only promising you seven years of LUCK. Making no promises it will be GOOD luck! Which, now that I think of it, was the point of the “Ringworld” books, wasn’t it?
It would certainly be lucky for HIM
But not necessarily good luck for him either.
Teela’s luck was always good for _her_, but could be a disaster for anyone else around her.
I’m not sure she considered becoming a Protector good luck for herself. 🙁
Nobody who has become a Protector wants to go back to being human, the memories of how stupid you were are just too embarrassing,,, 🙂

I take his “chivalrous” version isn’t getting the fun kind of riding after all.
