David Harmon (mental_mouse) says:
“How do I put this?” I’d go with bluntness:
“That is the human part! Natural lions don’t need to prove squat….” (weenie, weedy, vici?)
Is the cast “tab” meant to be blank? I’m still having some trouble with the various links.
The opening to filename story hints that “gender inappropriate” might be a point of pride for Tip.
Jeffrey Channing Wells (channing) says:
We’re still hashing out the cast page; for the moment, it is a space intentionally left blank. In our defense, part of the presumed function of a cast page is to help bring new readers up to the speed of existing fans, and at this point, everybody’s pretty much at the same level… 😉
bzzzzd (bzzzzd) says: So, if one has just a smidge of NON-human DNA, does that make one entirely non-human? If Leo has a generous scoop of human DNA, then that makes him non-leonine, right? Even though he is referred to as a lion. Would Unity take umbrage at being referred to as mostly human? This agency that is dedicated to non-humans, does it only help those that don’t look human? Regardless of how much or how little human DNA one has? One only asks, because one might have a TINY percentage of non-human DNA, and wants to know what this agency might be able to do for one. Besides the shooting and the boom-boom-pow.
Sam Daniel (samhdaniel) says:
bzzzzd: the shooting is the boom-boom-pow!
Shaenon Garrity (shaenongarrity) says: You do not have to not look human. This may actually be relevant later on. However, individuals who don’t look human may be both easier to identify and in greater need of help.
Steve Ford (sford) says:

David, I don’t understand that. I can’t even parse it. But I’m eager for hints, so please explain!
James Rice (jhrice) says:

I would expect that individuals that were biologically human but strongly affected by mad science would be helped. Cyborgs come to mind. On the other end of the spectrum, Dana didn’t have any human DNA, (unless the intelligence serum had some), and she seems like the primary type of individual that the group was specifically trying to intercept.
Justin Grubbs (the_purple_knight) says:
Actually I think Dana did have human DNA. Stanford has created mice with brains that are one percent human. They did this by injecting human neurons into their brains. Maybe this doesn’t count as DNA, I’m not actually a scientist.
On another thought, isn’t it just a little ironic that Unity has pink hearts on her sweatshirt. I have to assume it came from someone less, how shall I put it, bloodthirsty.
This makes me think of the line in “Time After Time”. If you aren’t familiar with it, it’s a movie where H G Wells invents a time machine and Jack the Ripper uses it to escape from the police by fleeing to the future – our present day. When Wells catches up to him, Jack explains that this is the era he belongs in – or, more precisely, that the world has actually surpassed him in terms of violence.
Jack the Ripper: “Ninety years ago I was a freak. Today, I am an amateur.”

Rage, urge to destroy, have a need to prove superiority we other creatures by beating them down…yup, that’s us in a nutshell, alright.
Rage, destroy, mate, protect mate and young, fight for resources, repeat.
