Oh dang, I interpreted that as just being five years earlier in in-strip time, and the usual wobbliness of comic vs. real-time. Now it makes a lot more sense.
I thought it was intentional.
Having your avatar just giving Prodigal an open mouthed silent stare as though you couldn’t believe they actually went there.
If you’ve read Narbonic, you know that sex was involved, and very likely in the most ridiculous ways, places, dimensions, swapped bodies, eras and maybe species. Wouldn’t surprise me at ALL if Nick was preggers at some point.
There’s probably a word for a final chapter that is mostly epiloguish and takes place some time after the books final events but unlike a true epilogue does indeed reveal so essential narrative elements (often told through flashback exposition). This “Roger, it’s good to see you– when we were last together you were rushing into that burning building. Well, Fred, Ursula the seabiscuit was never the same that when she lost the election…” type narrative is common enough it ought to have a name— I feel *that* is what this final chapter feels like.
It took my brain a few seconds to remember Nick’s other form. I had to read the sentence 3 times trying to figure out how Robert did NOT say what I think he said. Context really is everything, sometimes.
When Annex One calls,
Five years have gone by.
I’m here inside chopper heaven.
I’ll fly to this site,
A little night flight
Will put me in chopper heaven.
We made this base a happy place with lots of room.
It’s for the best this vessel carries bride and groom.
Just Ginny and me,
And babies now three.
We’re happy in chopper heaven.

Jonah Yu gets upset about learning of Nick and Virginia concerning the birth of their first, but that’s not the worst—two others were born while sojourning.
Well. I stand corrected.
The way the two of them go at it, this is much more reasonable.
D’awww
Now I’m going to be sad if this turns out to be some sort of virtual reality scenario
So about 5 years passed somewhere? I must have got off at the wrong Tardis stop.
That parking brake is tricky.
strip about four days ago said five years, yeah.

Just a wrong turn at Albuquerque.
OH! I should’ve seen that coming!
I dunno. Shaenon doesn’t usually work that blue.
More to the point, so should Jonah…
Five Year Gap, oh dear.
I love that #1 is already giving the Taylor stare.
The way they’ve been going at each other I can’t say I’m surprised.
Man, Nick looks so satisfied in that last panel. I’m glad for him.
Also…three girls?
Three…maybe two?
Nick gave three “names”, but the speech balloon showed two voices.
I don’t know if the youngest can speak yet.
They’re all “your mom” so that would suggest they’re female, even the future one.
Clearly, you don’t understand “your mom” jokes.
Children who have not yet been born are notoriously bad at speaking.
In this strip, Nick could be telling the truth…
Hmm… my understanding of “your mom” jokes must be faulty. (Or Nick’s is… but that couldn’t be possible.)
You know who else has a faulty understanding of “your mom” jokes?
Sorry, apparently multiple handclap emojis won’t post here.
I thought it was intentional.

I have to agree with Aname. Either way, thank you so much!
Didn’t think it was a nice thing to say to the godparents.
Wow. That WAS a lot of sex.
Yeah… they had to have had sex at least three times in those five years.
Not with that Zerhakker expression… and I’m willing to bet Nick and Ginny Zerhakker-Lee take their multiplication seriously.
True. If the first two are twins, they only had to have done it twice.
Not if they’re fraternal.
It’s a mitzvah!
If Nick’s seriously religious, birth control may not be on the program.
Ginnie should hang onto those maternity blouses…
This is a comic of Mad Science, sirrah. What makes you think sex was involved at all?
…okay, okay, apart from the prodigious amounts of sex.
But natural conception would rob Ginny of the chance to make Improvements! to their genes!
I think Tiger Lilly had hinted about making “improvements”
to Nicks new body.
Those might have been more mechanical than genetic though.
Something’s been said about Nick’s gonads working his jaw with a little string.
Odd how that makes this come to mind…

I wonder if this is a ramp up to the introduction of nieces and nephews. I wouldn’t really try to predict Aimee and Lovelace either way.
Also, wow, this entire five year gap is pretty tempting fanfic bait, isn’t it?
Okay, now I’m picturing kids who are two-thirds human-presenting AI and one-third Baron Mistycorn 😀
This whole week has felt epiloguish. I feel like we’re not far from the end now.
Shaenon writing “we’re not quite done yet” was my first clue…

Be fruitful and multiply.
Odd, I don’t see any obvious propellers on either of the kids . . .
“If you’re very, very good today,” Dr. Lee said, “you can go for a ride in your father.”
It took my brain a few seconds to remember Nick’s other form. I had to read the sentence 3 times trying to figure out how Robert did NOT say what I think he said. Context really is everything, sometimes.
The props would be on either arm, not on head or nose.
Given the competitiveness between teams Zerhakker and Wilkin, I wonder how many – ah, “off-spring” – Tip and Tigerlily will show up with?
So, you are wondering how many they
*drum roll* wind up with?
Had to say it (I’ll see myself out)
*Applause*

Question: Are the kids part helicopter?
Give Virginia a little more time, and they could be.
Insert “helicopter parent” joke here.
