Calling it now: next step up the ladder comes from taking this guy’s place when he disappears/dies due to an accident at the newly-combined time bureau.
I’m having trouble placing the left hand (on our right) in 3D space. I suspect his dark shirt is hiding the lines that would indicate that his arm is pointed straight at us.
It’s still unclear if actual magic (other than mad science reality-bending) exists or not in the Skin Horse universe: the existence of actual demons in Narbonic strongly suggests it, but Shaenon has made it clear she’s ignoring that “canon” for Skin Horse.
So. it’s uncertain if this is guy is delusional or just very bad at his job. 🙂
Demons aren’t magic. They’re supernatural. They exist in a different dimension, and are normally not visible to humans. That’s true even in the real world.
@James R. Baerg, ‘Pendric’ is a collection of novellas set in the same world, but in a different region and at a different point in time. Quite worth reading, IMO.
I have to agree with awgiedawgie on this. Magic at it’s core is simply imposing your will on external reality (which is far more fluid than generally acknowledged). That’s the basis of Clarke’s Law.
A hedge witch making the foliage in a clearing vanish with a gesture (as related in Michael Talbot’s intriguing “The Holographic Universe”) differs only in degree from Facebook making billions of dollars vanish 😉
Aliens, demons, ultraterrestrials – call them what you will. They are accustomed to a mutable reality and find it very disconcerting when the disbelief of a single human can morph the local environment away from the glamour they are presenting unless they employ a full coven of their adepts to override our Consensus Reality. That’s why we traded Magic for Science, where physical laws largely hold sway. It’s easier, safer and grows in power with our population.
A wizard apprentice is he. He has asked of the perks yet to be. Executive washroom, but there’s no magic stick-brooms. It was too much to hope for, you see.
I’m confused, is this climbing up or down the corporate ladder?
I think it’s like traversing a fourth spatial dimension.
I believe that would be zorth.
They have an M. C. Escher corporate ladder, it’s both up and down at the same time.
Since he’s there as a spy access to the executive washroom is actually a pretty good perk since it means access to executives.
I’ll bet I know his favorite TV network!
It’s traditional to make apprentices do all the crud work before teaching them anything cool. 🙂

I really like the wizardly dynamic hand gestures in panel three.

Last time he had charge of the restrooms, it was a fiasco. http://skin-horse.com/comic/we-offer/

This *is* Skin Horse. Being delusional would probably improve his job performance significantly.

A perhaps overly fine distinction. Traditionally, much magic was considered to be a result of making deals with demons.
There’s also Bujold’s Pendric angle.
Is ‘Pendric’ a reference to the 4+1 ‘gods’ of ‘The Curse of Chalion’ ?

Tip is so disheveled from the spider struggle! <3
…for precisely as long as he remembered that he should be.
When you’re the sorcerer’s apprentice, aren’t magic broomsticks the last thing you want to have to deal with?
LOL! I would *love* to see how “Chris” handled that predicament!
It would depend on what music was playing in the background.
And who was holding the other end of the broomstick.
