Indeed. Narbonic was the same way. “Angels” was the last of its storylines that felt (to me) like it had a distinct break from the one that followed it.
You know, my usual advice is to blame your Hippos on the Smell Connector, but when it’s “chae” for “chat” the accusation rings rather hollow. It’s just not the kind of mistake the Smell Connector would make.
I doubt it was intentional, last strip was a evening sky and this one looks to be midday, either they spent the night or it’s a color error on jeffs part (which I doubt).
Makes perfect sense to me. Sweetheart was looking for some helpful answers from Tip in the previous strip. As usual, she didn’t get any.
So now that the sun is up and Gavotte is awake, Sweetheart is going straight to her for answers. Gavotte’s answers may tend to lean a bit to the cryptic, but at least they’re not about hair care.
Chapter title is the description of the adversary in the childrens novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes..
First time post.. thoroughly enjoyed the ride thus far!
That’s the book the movie the “Iron Giant” was based on, right? I presume it was fairly different from the filmed version, in which the main opponent turned out to be the Giant’s own darker self.
So we’re going to end up with a monster hiding behind the moon, singing a beautiful song to bring peace to Earth? Wait… we’ve already got peace, with reality blindness. Maybe we need to check behind the moon to stop the song!
Gavotte must have super tea-drinking powers. I looked it up, and even the largest honey bee colonies have a total body weight of six or seven kilograms at the most.
Super powers in general, really. It’s a bit of a job for a colony of bees to move around a box of dog biscuits, handle a tea kettle, or unpack and pitch a tent.
No wonder I didn’t recognize it, released here in 1968. I was 12 then, and disdained “kiddie books”. Probably had devoured most of the adult science fiction in the town library by then. That’s not a huge boast, it’s a small library.
You don’t need a pup tend to spend time in.
You don’t need a box of Milk-Bone snacks.
You don’t need some fine mosquito netting
To stop me from a thousand bee attack.
You don’t need to press me on my daughter,
Or to learn why she is called Pavane.
Yes, our Skin-Horse waits here for info,
And you don’t need to ask me yet again.
I thought it was a reference to the wounded little bat that landed on the external fuel tank of the Discovery on 3/17/2009, and clung to it during take-off. It probably didn’t hang on for long (that’s a lot of G-force for a little bat to withstand). It got to be a “thing” on the internet, lots of folks hoping for him to make it to orbit.

Sweetheart won’t move from the spot. But Gavotte wants to talk quite a lot. No need for a tenting ’cause there’s no dissenting, but of tea they might need a new pot.
Oh! New chapter!
How did this happen?
They often sneak up on you. Skin Horse has gotten less episodic as it’s gone on.
Indeed. Narbonic was the same way. “Angels” was the last of its storylines that felt (to me) like it had a distinct break from the one that followed it.
And later, we found out that this was because the stuff that was happening was plotted out years in advance.
Just wait until it’s time for Skin Horse’s Director’s Cut!
Suddenly, a shot rang out! The maid screamed. Meanwhile, on a small farm in Kansas, a boy was growing up.
So Gavotte is there, too. Oh, good! And of course she’s alway up for a chae over a nice cuppa tea.
Do bees get a buzz from caffeine?
Oh, new chapter! Weird title, even by Skin Horse standards.
That’s “always up for a chat” – someday I may learn to type.
I read it as “always up for a chai over a nice cuppa tea”, which seemed redundant.
The title reminds me of Clarke’s Childhood’s End.
Isn’t it a reference to Neon Genesis Evangelion?
Ah, no it isn’t. I should have remembered that they’re all taken from children’s literature.
This is what I thought of when I read the title:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_space_bats
I immediately thought “correct horse battery staple”.
You know, my usual advice is to blame your Hippos on the Smell Connector, but when it’s “chae” for “chat” the accusation rings rather hollow. It’s just not the kind of mistake the Smell Connector would make.
I thought Sweetheart and Tip were on the roof of Annex One.
Me too. Did we miss something?
Looks like Sweetheart and Gavotte are also on the roof.
Huh. Tip must already be off planning Nick and Virginia’s wedding. (You know he will, even though Nick said no.)
“Would it kill you to be a bit more unhelpful so I can have this?”
Did this get posted out of order? It feels like we missed a transition scene. I had to double check to see if I missed an update lol

Colorist is Pancha, but equally likely to get things right.
I think this might be an old strip that got reposted? Can’t quite recall, not about to spend an hour digging through at random trying to confirm.
New chapter, new day, methinks.

Agreed, except I doubt Sweetheart was looking for anything from Tip other than reassurance that he wasn’t leaving her team.

Ooooh! Nice catch. I love these references in the comic – I love the comic – but I love the references the most.
Thanks! I was thinking it was maybe a cooler version of the old pirate-ninja-zombie thing, but the reference is even cooler.

I wonder if the honey is caffeinated.

Okay, it’s from Ted Hughes’s “The Iron Man.” Yes, I Googled it, though not on Google.

This is the first (only?) time we’ve seen Gavotte with a standard hive box. I suppose that’s how she hides in plain sight?
She had one earlier, but was keeping Chris in it for some reason.
Jokes on us, that’s actually just a two-drawer nightstand!

Another excellent effort, Robert! Although I find reference to “a tenting” rather ominous in the context of Gavotte…
