Skin Horse 11 and 12: Coming Soon
Shaenon: Oh my gosh, look at this. We’re working on the final two volumes of Skin Horse! These books will be crowdfunded through Zoop starting on June 5. That’s two Sundays from now. Keep an eye out!
Channning: Thanks for all the great crowdfunding experiences we’ve had over the years, folks. You guys are the best.
EEEEEE!!!
That last cover has an Oz feel to it. I love it!
More than a feel! A direct reference to the third book “Ozma of Oz” (It’s Ozma’s chariot riding on the magic carpet over the Deadly Desert after liberating the royal family of Ev from the Nome King). I more than love it!

You beat me to it. http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/c/c1/ZMFZFSFWSS1985.jpg
*squints* Does this make Sweetheart the Saw-Horse, or is this just a side effect of the fact that the original illustration doesn’t have Toto?
I thought if it was the *after* picture (the original is the before… Dorothy is viewing the chariot coming to her rescue) and this is after the adventure and they are all returning. I base that entirely on Sweetheart being *in* the chariot so I figure she is supposed to be Dorothy. Although if Unity is the scarecrow and she is riding on sweethearts back, I guess that’d make Sweetheart the Sawhorse. Of course we can’t make this associations *too* literally or consistently….
…right down to the lion and tiger. Just how far ahead did Shaenon/Jeff plan this?!?!
Spoilers!!
I really gotta read those books, if I can get a hold of them.
Mombi turned Ozma into Tippetarius, doh, of course.
If I had read them I would know that.
I seem to recall you can get them cheap to free as ebooks. I have a one volume ebook version. My dead tree copies sit together on the shelf. I used to look forward to getting one or two at a time on birthdays and Christmas.
yup, I downloaded them for free from Project Gutenberg, (Hope that’s properly spelled)
Well, reading things I grab online hasn’t been that satisfactory an aesthetic experience for me: I prefer books.
You might be able to turn up copies of the editions Del Rey Books put out in the early eighties.
I guess the 70s Reilly and Lee (with endpaper by Dick Martin) are not as obiquiteous as they were when I was a child, and I suppose browsing used bookstores is not the experience it was a decade ago. It shouldn’t be *hard* to find the Baum books. Although not cheap (though not expensive either– only when compared to the 6 for a dollar e-book collections are the 2.95 Barnes and Noble Classic editions) the Books of Wonder reproductions are truly excellent and I treasure my complete collection.
(The best place is in your grandmothers attic from your mother and uncles childhood, of course. Although not everyone is lucky enough to have one….)
It’s not like this books are unknown or rare (not like finding the original first Doctor Doolittle book).
Gutenberg would be best. They are *really* enhanced with the illustrations…. a lot.
I have absolutely no idea how Zoop works, so I’m hoping for a “have all 12 books!”-tier :3
ideally with an “also Narbonic!” dealio; shipping’s fierce >_>;
Without question!
Congratulations! Great work!
We’ve come to the end of the line. Two volumes will finish it fine. With Oz-theming covers for Skin-Horse art lovers, but, as for the ending—we’ll whine.
Deftly done (and so true).
Mow I wonder if volume 11 is a reference I should get. A figure sitting and looking at a smaller figure. “Ben and Me” (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/517gdVT2KgL._SX334_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg)? Probably not, but it is probably something I know very well and would recognize.
You might be onto something. I glanced through the other covers, and maybe some of them might be in tribute to something, but it all eludes me.
After going to the trouble of pasting the picture on a page and zooming in on it…there’s one character I just can’t figure out who it is. Right behind Dr. Lee, next to the cobra, appearing to wear glasses.
Everybody else I recognize, though I don’t know why Jonah Yu isn’t there when Nera Vivaldi is…
