Skin Horse Calligraphy
Shaenon: Matteo was kind enough to send us this sample calligraphy of Skin Horse names. He writes, “This practice is ‘only’ with a felt-tipped calligraphy marker, while I am learning the letter patterns. I will soon be transitioning to a pen with a nib that you dip into the ink, or load with ink and an eyedropper, which adds the challenge of controlling the output consistency.”
I love calligraphy and I’m basically awed by anyone with craft skills, so this is awesome. Thank you so much!
Channing: Just the sort of thing to add a touch of class to our comic that, let’s make no mistake, contains a small, rotund, potty-mouth unicorn. Thank you so much, Matteo!
Very nice! I tried my hand at calligraphy once (ba-dum-pump) and failed horribly. Matteo is already off to a way better start than me. Applause!
I used to try my hand at calligraphy. Think I did it until the ink cartridge ran out, but it left a tendency to write that way with magic markers.
I’ve done a lot of calligraphy, with outmost success, even if I am rarely even trying.
My roommate looked upon my shoulder to tell me the word I’m looking for is cryptography, not calligraphy?
I was half expecting it to end with “Cordially invite you to the wedding”, but this is better!
Same.

To be fair to the unicorn, he is a Baron.
This makes me want to see a spin-off story called “The Adventures of Baron Mistycorn”, done all in Gothic black-letter.
Not so much calligraphy as such, but Walt Kelly was the master of lettering styles that revealed the character of his characters.
It’s a list of calligraphy names. It’s almost epigraphy fame. But script that’s so Gothic and behemothic might cause pseudepigraphy claims.
So glad to share my practice, inspired by your amazing comic and characters! It will be interesting to me to see how the names look in various other hands as I learn them (eventually). Thanks also for sharing with the community here – I feel like I have joined an illustrious company…
