July 2021 Wallpaper: Sea Dog
Shaenon: My inspiration for this month’s wallpaper was children’s illustrator Edward Ardizzone, especially his Young Tim books. He painted beautiful watercolor seascapes and pictures of children getting into adventures.

Channing: Aw, hey, remember when there was a sea serpent in this strip? Good times, good times.
aw, picnic basket! And Sweetheart looks so happy.
The ocean is so well drawn and the subtle color gradients in the sky make for an idyllic interlude!
It makes me think there must be a recording of “Yes We Have No Bananas” by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn playing in the background…
“On the next episode of ‘Amazons Get Swallowed’…”
(Yes, it’s obscure. I would have never heard about the books if we hadn’t lived in Australia for a while.)
I only get the reference because for a while I was in a book group where the organiser’s choices were usually kids’ books. I found it pretty bland.
So Unity and Sweetheart at sea, with bottles and baskets, oh gee. But something’s arisen from the depths, so now listen—the picnic’s not two, but now three.
If that boat ever turned over, Sweetheart would have to do the dog paddle.
Beautiful. I was going to say I’m not familiar with Ardizonne’s work, but I looked him up and I totally am (The Land of Green Ginger! Stig of the Dump!) I just didn’t remember his name.
(b.t.dubs, Wikipedia says the character was called “Little Tim”.)
