July 2019 Wallpaper: Chevalier
Shaenon: For this month’s wallpaper, I opted to draw some heroic historical cross-dressing. This illustration is based on a portrait of the Chevalier d’Eon, 18th-century French soldier, diplomat, and spy for Louis XV. The Chevalier was a cross-dresser and/or trans woman (this was a difficult person to put into any kind of clearly labeled box) who wore women’s clothing sometimes for spy purposes, sometimes just because.
As usual, if you make a donation in any amount to the Skin Horse Tip Jar, or contribute any amount to our Patreon, we’ll give you a link to this wallpaper, designed for two computer desktop sizes and cell phones. Patreon contributors will continue to receive new wallpaper for the length of their contribution.
As a bonus, you’ll get this second, cobrariffic wallpaper from the archives:
Channing: See? Your zombies and talking helicopters comic can be educational!
This is just all kinds of classy. Now I kind of want to do a Regency French spinoff of Skin Horse, kind of like the Narbinic folks got a Victorian one.
“But, Holmes, that adventure was over weeks ago!”
Was the Chevalier the inspiration for the swordswoman in the “Rose of Versailles” manga, or do I misremember?
I suppose in that sort of setting Sweetheart could be sort of a reverse Puss in Boots: not much use in a fight, but a great valet and secretary to the hero.
Kickstarter for the French Regency spinoff of Skin Horse is when?
I’d like to see a comic where Chevalier d’Eon teams up with Julie d’Aubigny.
There’s a (reportedly not very good) anime loosely based on them called, simply enough, “Le Chevalier D’Eon.”
