Grandma Novak’s Famous Nut Roll
Shaenon: Okay, okay, one more non-comics story. You can read my new story “Grandma Novak’s Famous Nut Roll” in Lightspeed Magazine now. Features working recipes!
As I noted last week, most of the short stories I’ve written over the years are linked from my website, shaenon.com, for the curious.
Channing: Can’t say too much about this one without spoilers, but you should definitely check it out!
There’s a certain… Addams quality to the story…!
That was delightfully creepy.
Your recipe for the thumbprint cookies is the one my great aunt taught me 45 years ago – as long as the nuts are well-chopped walnuts! I’m 61 now and have -never- found that particular recipe before in any other cookbook [but I have not looked all that diligently].
Brings me to mind of Georgia Dunn’s Swan Eaters.

So good I had to send the link to my sister, who is the creepy story maven. She loved it.
…Should I be searching Russian and German folktales now, or did this family deal with the ones that found out?
There’s a lot out there… all of it is disturbing. For instance:

I’ve been cutting the sugar in half in my cookie recipes since the diabetes diagnosis. My cookies are still tasty, but will that interfere with the ‘Hunt’? ;^)
Puts me in mind of Georgia Dunn’s Swan Eaters.
