Shaenon: I’m going to come out and say it: I have no idea why Mirror Sweetheart has an eyepatch. It suits her strangely well.
Channing: I can help! In an excised strip that I never actually submitted to Shaenon, Mirror Sweetheart explains that she wears an eyepatch in case there is an unexpected nuclear blast, so that she can retain sight in at least one eye. When Sergio points out that she probably has more control over the world’s remaining nuclear weapons than the average person, she responds by laughing uncontrollably, implying that nuclear blasts may still be unexpected even when she’s in full “control” of them.
And here I thought that she had an eyepatch because a goatee on a dog would look too silly.
I can’t believe it’s only just occurred to me that, in the same way that evil mirror universe duplicates with goatees are a reference to Earth Empire Spock, evil mirror universe duplicates with eyepatches are probably a reference to Brigade-Leader Lethbridge-Stewart.
I’ve failed as a Doctor Who fan, and will hand in my TARDIS keyring at the next meeting…
I thought it was so she could spot herself in the in the giant battle scenes…
Can’t remember if she switched it from one eye to the other…
The patch probably covers her implanted laser. Maybe her infrared sensors?
I now associate the eyepatch with Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke, especially when combined with a business suit.
Yesss, comics full of dogs <3
She’s probably an admirer of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, and got the idea from him. Contrary to popular supposition, Nelson _didn’t_ wear an opaque eyepatch over his blind eye: it was a sunshade worn over his good eye, in order to protect it.
