Wait, so by “ate an orphanage” they mean she ate the actual building but apparently not the people in it, huh… I guess Unity has been showing sympathy to bubbles despite being mentioned to eat other sentients, (usually human beings[or just maim them like chopping their arms off for spare parts]). but I assumed that was just her being crazy.
That’s too bad. I think right now we could use Unity on brains. She’d be the only one smart enough to figure out how to get Nick and Sweetheart out of their current predicaments.
It’s true, she’s like a certain character from Words of Radiance: due to some quirk not (really) her fault, her intelligence and compassion are kindof inversely proportional.
Has to be a simulation. Being a brain-in-a-jar, Nick really doesn’t have a reason to carry vodka, or a way to ingest it if he did. Besides, having a bottle would take up room that could be used for more gamebooks.
“Of all concoctions alcoholical
I know, but one that’s diabolical
I simply thrive on old Champagne and sparkling Burgandy
Whiskey, Cointreau, Moselle
Or Eau de Vie are just like tea
But, vodka, dont give me vodka,
For when i take a little drink
I forget to think
What a little drink can do to me
Vodka, don’t give me vodka,
For when i take a little nip, I begin to slip
And I start romancing with the man that I am dancing with
For vodka, makes me feel oddka
I go and grab a six foot two, anyone will do
If he’s only wise enought to see
I’ll not scream should he kiss me
Couldn’t if I would, wouldn’t if I could
Vodka, you ruin me.”

So it had been suggested in earlier comments that this constant stream of worst case scenarios may be how the Cure is put into effect. I kind of doubt it, but I can (kind of) see an argument being made for it. Mads usually go about their mad science business with major or complete disregard for the consequences of their actions and/or lack of empathy for others (to varying degrees).
This scenario Sweetheart is in could cause the Cure effect in someone who hasn’t gone mad or has just recently gone mad into this type, while they still give significant thought to how things can go wrong, If every major decision and attempt at creative thinking subject makes is promptly curb stomped by the worst possible outcome, they may well swear off of taking any risks ever. It could even explain reality blindness, as the victims may be blocking out anything they consider abnormal simply to avoid situations beyond what they are used to, in hopes of not messing them up.
I doubt this is the case, but it would be interesting.
Of course, orphanages don’t really exist in the United States any more. (Even the recent film version of Annie acknowledges this.) But hey, that just means Unity was out of the country when she did this.

or she ate the staff.
Still a step up from “y’all tried eating unoiled babies?”
That’s too bad. I think right now we could use Unity on brains. She’d be the only one smart enough to figure out how to get Nick and Sweetheart out of their current predicaments.
Unity on brains can do intellectual activities, but she’s lacking the empathy that sober Unity has, so could be even more dangerous to The Cause…
It’s true, she’s like a certain character from Words of Radiance: due to some quirk not (really) her fault, her intelligence and compassion are kindof inversely proportional.
So is this still Goldbug’s simulation, or is Sweetheart back in the real world?
This looks like Nick’s cockpit so I’m going to say real world
is it, he said cocked so I do not think it is Nick. She might still be in the simulation for all we know.
If she’s still in the simulation, I expect a Hans Zimmer “BWOMB” pronto!
Really hoping that the fact that he can swear is what tips her off to the sim.
Also the vodka did nothing, so maybe it’s still a simulation.
Vodka never works on her. Her idea of a marguarita is ‘fill bathtub with tequila and salt the rim’
Possibly an author error, but that’s a good point.
what if goldbug’s little experiment disabled the swear filter? can anyone go back and check?
Then again, “cocked” as a non-swear is kind of British, which I don’t think nick is

He did have mimosa’s for Doctor Lee, though, so it’s not too surprising if he has vodka on board.
Nick has a reason to carry drinks for Dr. Lee. Not sure he has a reason to carry drinks for Sweetheart.
he had some back in the dead dogs arc, so I don’t see why he would not have some now.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Of course, it doesn’t help that Nick here is right and Sweetheart totally deserves this, but still.
Well, progress is progress…
Next time try gin.
Star Tears ain’t no good.
Tequila.
Simulation for my guess.. No colander interface thingy?

Really.
Should this be an inspiration for you to write another lyric along this line, it’s all for the better.
Not me…it really is Gershwin and company. Stumbled across it looking for something else…seemed so perfect for this I just cut and pasted.
I’m suspecting “still in simulation” too, but it could go either way.

The Cure is a drug. Helen put it in clone-Dave’s coffee.

Different names. But would a rose by any other name taste just as sweet?
Good point. If she ate one of the bad ones in Eastern Europe, the children could be better off.
Wait a second…
Nick can’t say “cocked”!
