Yeah, kind of in line with what I’m thinking. I don’t think Sweetheart is there at all. It’s too carefully tailored to meet her neuroses, and Goldbug’s already demonstrated the ability to hijack the feed for its own purposes.
Captain, what’s that sound
That’s blaring all around?
That alarm, it indicates fire!
We must leave, the situation is dire!
Holy smoke, there’s smoke!
Came through the door that’s broke!
Rules and regs for safety we’ve had,
But some folks are just bad!
They let in the flames! FLAMES!
Menacing flames now approach us,
See how they grow ever higher! FIRE!
This is no time for reproaches,
No time for guilt-tripping games! FLAMES!
Though I don’t want to point fingers,
Though I don’t want to name names, FLAMES!
Guilt in her heart, it still lingers …
Sweetheart, she let in the flames! (Bad doggie! Bad doggie! Bad doggie! Bad doggie!
Bad doggie! Bad doggie! Bad doggie! Bad doggie …)
Looks like it. The whole thing is likely a simulation like what A-Sig was doing to Nick via the homunculus program. Though the question is, what is their specific goal?
Anasigma might be behind this, but it’s also possible that Goldbug hacked Sweetheart’s helmet to run her through a simulation, maybe to buy time for Moustachio to do some real damage.
tune: “I’m on Fire,” Bruce Springsteen
Hey, now, Sweetheart left a door ajar
Someone used that for a plan bizarre
Create an inferno dire
Oh, oh, oh it’s fake fire
Sweetheart’s most terrifying fear comes true
Disappointa the Captain, though he, too
Can’t be thereāhe did expire
Oh, oh, oh it’s fake fire
She can’t tell that a minatory force is messing with her brain
Punctuation and guilt gonna drive her insane
They’re pushing her buttons, ’cause they know she tries
To be good, and can’t see through their lies
It’s her sacrificial pyre
Oh, oh, oh it’s fake fire
I’m kind of surprised that no one is calling him out on the fact that, you know, he made a minor werewolf apocalypse on a whim and bagels. And then left it up to his daughter, who’s at most ten years old, to solve it.
It’s ten. Otherwise, wat with the whole “product of mad science”, her intestines would speed up time. The corpses of her breed would be highly sought after for decreasing production time in various industries.
Well, consider what we’re not seeing. The drone is actually there at Anasigma. So while we’re following Sweetheart’s experiential reality, Goldbug gets to do whatever it wants to with the drone. Inside Anasigma.
I’m willing to be Goldbug can do a *much* more convincing mad scientist act than Sweetheart.
You know, I just noticed that this update and the one before didn’t have the usual file names providing a few words in the ongoing story of Tip’s recruitment… I wonder if that’s a sign of when Goldbug started interfering with the feed, or just an unrelated pause in that side story.
Flash Gordon, by Queen ( had some fun with the voiceovers…hee)
[Firealarm Bwee bleeps replaces the thudding opening beat]
Flash – fi-re – Sweetheart left an open door!
Flash – fi-re – Sweetheart is a’ going down!
{Seemingly, there is no reason for these extraordinary stressors on Sweetheart.}
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
{Only Captain Bramin, formerly of Canada, has explained it’s a fire alarm.}
Flash – fi-re – everyone clear out!
{This chapter’s unprecedented heavy triggers is no cause for alarm.}
Flash – fi-re – Goldbug is involved with this!
May I be of assistance?
Too late for assistance.
Mad clenches his fist and cries
“Why didn’t someone report this?”
Sweetheart sobs behind where he stands.
{Progress Report: Sweetheart shows signs of cracking.}
(What do you mean, shows _signs_ of cracking? Fan the fire! All Weapons! Dispatch Dr. Ao with more it’s and its posters!)
Flash -fi-re
Flash – fi-re – will break Sweetheart finally
Just a dog
In a drone’s body
Who knows nothing but the man
That she ate a while ago
Is standing in front of her
And she’s failed at fire safety
Oh oh – oh oh
Argh…..I used brackets to differentiate between Sweetheart and the other voiceovers, forgetting that character might read as code. Sorry for double post.

Flash!
So when they reveal that this has all been a simulation designed to make her snap, does she (A) rampage or (B) frustrate their expectations by just being so relieved that she hadn’t actually left a fire door open that she accepts it all happily?
Yeah, in hindsight she should have told someone about the door.
Technically, she told Dr. Ao…
Take the Red Pill, Sweetheart! The Red Pill!
Yeah, kind of in line with what I’m thinking. I don’t think Sweetheart is there at all. It’s too carefully tailored to meet her neuroses, and Goldbug’s already demonstrated the ability to hijack the feed for its own purposes.
Agreed. That would also account for Captain Bram being there even though she ate him.
Yeahhhhhh, at this point it’s a practical guarantee.

I wonder if they’re purposely trying to break her. Wouldn’t put it past them…
I’m starting to lean towards “mind games” too. But sudden flash fires could be a hazard of mad science labs…

Someone definitely hacked it.
Probably the first time she got disconnected at the institute.
Um why doesn’t he understand evil people haircuts?
I’m kind of surprised that no one is calling him out on the fact that, you know, he made a minor werewolf apocalypse on a whim and bagels. And then left it up to his daughter, who’s at most ten years old, to solve it.
Ah, but what is that in human years?
It’s ten. Otherwise, wat with the whole “product of mad science”, her intestines would speed up time. The corpses of her breed would be highly sought after for decreasing production time in various industries.
*what*
This can’t be real, so how are they doing it? I suppose they could just be spoofing the signals from the remote body, since she isn’t there in person.
No? And why not?
Actors? We’ve seen literally nothing happen to Sweetheart that couldn’t easily be done in real life.
Got to be Goldbug playing mind games with her, the real mystery is – what is Goldbug’s agenda. Frankly, I have no idea.
Got to be Goldbug playing mind games with her, the real mystery is – what is Goldbug’s agenda? Frankly, I have no idea.
I’d say it’s along these lines.
Oh, twisty. Very twisty indeed… so all this could be a combination of Second Gate and a hacked drone?
Ingenious! Though I wonder…if that’s the Second Gate, what are they doing with the first one?
Well, consider what we’re not seeing. The drone is actually there at Anasigma. So while we’re following Sweetheart’s experiential reality, Goldbug gets to do whatever it wants to with the drone. Inside Anasigma.

Actually, in a building full of mad scientists, a flash fire should be a pretty common occurence
…and also possibly sentient. Well, we’ve had sentient water.
Sentient… so, closing the fire door would have been, what, murder?
You know, I just noticed that this update and the one before didn’t have the usual file names providing a few words in the ongoing story of Tip’s recruitment… I wonder if that’s a sign of when Goldbug started interfering with the feed, or just an unrelated pause in that side story.

And yes, with Duchovny and Anderson and Carter.
Ew.
This could be the dynamite that blows up the logjam on The Adjacent Site…
Well, in a situation like this, there’s only one thing to do.
Break into Mustachio’s collection of tins to see if he’d left any popcorn.
So when they reveal that this has all been a simulation designed to make her snap, does she (A) rampage or (B) frustrate their expectations by just being so relieved that she hadn’t actually left a fire door open that she accepts it all happily?
Her idea of a rampage is to spill coffee and pig out at church brunches. She’ll just be happy. UNITY would have rampaged properly.
Strangely enough, I don’t know if Unity can rampage properly either. She would just be doing what she always does.
