Mistycorn Sketches
Shaenon: Prepping for the Skin Horse 5 bonus story, “Great Moments With Baron Mistycorn.” (The doodle at the bottom is just for fun. “Great Moments With Baron Mistycorn” is not actually about ethics in video game journalism. OR IS IT?)
Speaking of which, the Skin Horse 5 Kickstarter drive is swinging into its final week. And yes, as a matter of fact, the rewards do include the original art for the Baron Mistycorn story. Thanks so much to everyone who’s pledged so far, and please please please spread the word!
Channing: I went to Disneyland a couple weeks ago, and instead of just enjoying myself like a normal person, I sat around trying to think of how I could make a story set in Disneyland featuring a talking unicorn robot. Thankfully I also enjoyed myself.
That’s it, that last image killed me. Put it on my gravestone: Killed by gamergate Whimsycorp unicorn 😀
As sick as I am of this GamerGate bullshit (the vitriol from both the pro- and anti-sides), that image at the bottom is hilarious.
Honestly, the whole thing can go hang for me as well. Fed up of hearing about some intern’s ex-whatever.
Pointing out gamergaters are full BS of not vitriol. It’s a fact.
The 2nd image from the bottom reminds me of a cat that’s been scooped up. Its the Panic in the eyes….

Gamergate! It’s important, Gamergate!
All the girl geeks who are fake, we’ll extirpate!
Go away, and fix your make-up
While the cause of men we take up!
Gamergate! It’s important, Gamergate!
Gamergate! Little girlie, cool your jets!
Just ignore the hate, obscenities, and threats!
It’s about the journalism!
(What the heck is “chauvinism”?)
Gamergate’s as important as it gets!
Ooooh, journalism!
See, it’s ethical to call our rivals names!
Eeeww, feminism!
All that estrogen is ruining our games!
We’ll agree with Mistycorn,
Then go back to watching porn!
Gamergate! It’s an issue!
(Someone hand me a tissue!)
Ga- … mer- … gate!
Hooray!
This song knows where it’s at.
Most excellent as always.
FYI, a lot of the trolls are female now.
We’ve got a saying here in Kansas, “Don’t dish out what you can’t take.”
If what you’re saying is true, then the tables have turned and it will be hilarious to watch those desperately trying to keep their reality blinders on.
Gamergate is the Iran-Iraq war of the Internet. It’s a shame both sides can’t lose.
You know Gamergate is about all the videogame web magazines, using term loosely, calling gamers women hating basement dwelling freaks and not whatserface’s sex life right? That has a different # name thing. Don’t care about what she did with whom, I dislike being called a piece of garbage by “Video game journalists” I mean Jack Thompson and Joe Lieberman were bad enough I get to hear it from my own press and webcomics now?
If you dion’t like being called garbage, stop associating with garbage.
*swish*
I’m just commenting here to let the other commenters know that at least one gamergate supporter reads and enjoys this comic. Feel free to engage our arguments in the appropriate venues (I don’t think the comment thread of this comic is one.), but please don’t demonize or dismiss us as trolls and harassers.
More than one. That said, i’m not a gamer, so I have no dog in the fight, but there’s more to it than one side saying it’s a bunch of corrupt game journalists and the other side saying it’s a bunch of misogynists, and i think people are falling too far into assuming the worst of both.
Point being, unless you understand at least the basics of how the Internet Culture operates — for good or ill — then you can’t possibly be making an informed decision on what’s going on.
Also: the tagline itself: #gamergate. The -gate suffix is pretty much a go-term phrase in the US anymore for exposing corruption and unethical practices, ever since the infamous Watergate. Yes, #gamergate has been co-opted by a bunch of trolls in recent weeks, but at it’s core #gamergate WAS actually about ethics in gaming journalism (however laughable a concept that may be in ANY journalism these days). Hence the whole use of the ‘-gate’ suffix.
So remember that while there are a bunch of trolls on either side stirring the pot, there are actually some people using the tag like it was coined to be used.
