Wallpaper: Wanted
Shaenon: I asked Andrew what I should draw for this February’s wallpaper, and he said, “How about a St. Valentine’s Day Massacre?” So here’s the cast all dolled up in whatever the 1930s version of steampunk is.
As usual, if you make a donation in any amount to the Skin Horse Tip Jar, I will send you a link to the wallpaper. Each wallpaper a comes in two different aspect ratios (regular screen and widescreen) to fit most computer monitors, and in both Mac-friendly and PC-friendly orientations. Here’s the wallpaper page.
As a bonus, just to keep things all sepia-toned, you’ll also get the February 2012 wallpaper, “Gorey Agents.”
Channing: I think we should call this visual aesthetic “pulppunk.” Anyway, this is rad and you should totally tip us something to get it in glorious full size. And when am I wrong? Never. That’s when.
Hmmm, I consider the very roots of steampunk to be the movie Metropolis, which was released in 1927….
But I have heard the term Dieselpunk bandied about for later period technological dystopianism.
I just watched that film last night! It is awesome if you turn the contrast way up and the brightness way down.
wouldn’t a 1930’s [?]-Punk Nick be some kind of twin engine (and/or rotor) autogyro or gyrodyne?

ps: I don’t know who ‘wears’ it better ….
Unity with the ‘Clyde’ look or Tip with the ‘Bonnie” look.
🙂
I read “pulppunk” as “puppypunk”. That’s an amusing mental image for sure.
At any rate, nice wallpaper.
Yes, for the 1930s, the term would be Dieselpunk. TV Tropes has a nice article about it: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DieselPunk.
I REALLY hope I can manage to quit after just this one page of TV Tropes, but what are the odds of that? Thank you EVER so much! /sarcasm
Um, yeah, sorry. But it is the black hole of the internet, sooner or later we all get stuck there.

Sweetheart and Tip,
Moustachio the robot,
And Unity, they’re so not
In the G-Men’s good books!
Sweetheart and Tip,
They’re stylin’ and they’re vogue now!
In shades, they’re goin’ rogue now
Like a bunch of crooks!
Now Shaenon drew
A thing to hang on your screen!
And then, if you
Will send a dollar or two,
She’ll send you, too, a Gorey scene!
Sweetheart and Tip,
Now here’s their latest caper!
They made a new wallpaper …
For … you!
Valvepunk. This give you vacuum tubes (“valves” in Brittan) and hydraulics.
I was going back through some older storylines today, and I gotta say that some of the punchlines are even funnier in retrospect. For instance: http://skin-horse.com/comic/todays-comic-901/ given what we’ve recently learned about the NSA.
