Sweetheart Medallions by Paul Lenoue
Shaenon: I totally dig that we as a species now have Star Trek replicator technology, or at least a primitive version that can be used to make plastic medallions with pictures of talking dogs on them. Paul Lenoue made these prototype Sweetheart medallions on his 3D printer like it wasn’t even a thing. And if that’s not cool enough, check out this steampunk tiki fellow:
It is so time to make Moustachios. Thanks, Paul!
Channing: I was about to say that I remember that little ghost from when you showed it to me in Seattle until I realized that IT’S NOT THE SAME LITTLE GHOST IT’S JUST AN EXACT DUPLICATE YOU REPLICATED OUT OF THIN AIR. Future!
With the moving arms!
Next project: cute cobras with hats!

Semi-seriously now, those were my first attempts. I can make better ones with more practice, especially now that I have a 3D scanner. Time for some experimentation IN THE THIRD DIMENSION! MWA-HA-HA-HA!
That “rampage” side keeps reminding me of this thing here:

I can see Sweetheart now, tapping at gigantic discarded cups….
Despite plastic vs metal – my first thought was challenge coins.
When Schlock Mercenary recently did a Kickstarter w/ Challenge Coins – I did some research and was surprised to discover how prevalent they were – even outside the military.
I could easily see SH (the organization) using either challenge coins or pins as recognition signs
Here is the link to the Schlock Mercenary store for those who have no idea what I’m talking about:

Skin Horse has 6 members. Six. If they need recognition signs, they have serious memory problems (and no, Ira is not part of Project Skin Horse).
I’m thinking big picture here. As readers we know there is a conspiracy of some sort, a community of SH clients and other non-human beings, etc.
Much like Masons have their tie tacks and lapel pins – the non-human/metahuman community may have recognition signals – much like the old Hobo chalk marks, wardriving chalkmarks for open Wi-Fi signals, etcetera.
Besides – most government agencies have copied the military tradition of Challenge Coins – they have morphed in purpose to being collector items rather than recognition symbols or symbols of seniority. They could just end up giving them to clients as a handy ‘proof’ that their paperwork is in order – much sturdier than carrying actual papers that could give away the existence of such a ‘Black-Ops’ agency.
I don’t normally squee, but … SQUEE!
My comment above was meant for Palenoue’s link to cobras in hats. Seriously, check it out.

Making a medallion!
Trippy zippy zappy goopy happy whippy whappy zap!
Skin Horse authors, they will cheer and clap
At this medal I have made!
It’s … Sweetheart on a rampage!
Trippy zippy zappy goopy happy whippy whappy zap!
Not much bigger than a bottlecap,
Resinous medallion I have made!
You’ll see me replicate whatever you want now,
Just like they did it on Star Trek!
Although it’s only two or three inches tall …
And now I’ll make a little tiki Moustachio!
Shaenon will think it’s cute as heck,
And say “This is the sweetest thing of all!”
Making a medallion!
Trippy zippy zappy goopy happy whippy whappy zap!
I can make all sorts of silly crap,
Like this medal I have made!
She’s … kicking over coffee!
Trippy zippy zappy goopy happy whippy whappy zap!
Having fun in 3-D never fails,
Watching Sweetheart going off the rails!
Did you notice all the fine details …
On this medal I have made?
I wiped out my wife when we were driving back from Phoenix Wednesday night. We were listening to podcasts, and one of them played a snippet from If I Were A Rich Man, and I started singing “If I were a Flintstone, Yaba-daba-daba-daba-daba-daba-daba do!” She almost had to pull over.
If I were Kenshiro, yatatatatatatatatatataaaa,
All day long I’d blow up bad guys’ heads
If I were a North Star man!
If I were a cat-girl,
Meow meow meow meow meow meow meow,
All day long I’d purr purr meow,
If I were a kitty-girl!
(You know, if I wasted less time posting silly comments on webcomics, I’d probably have more time to finish that filk so I could perform it at anime cons, nyao!)
Before the second photo loaded, I thought these were some kind of Rampage Tokens, used to keep track of one’s annual mayhem allowance.
They were 3D doodles of the coins used in the Basement Dwellers game, which is still in the forums.
If those Sweetheart medallions were made in mirror image, you could use them to make cookies.
That was my first guess when I saw them.
You want cookie cutters? I can make cookie cutters. Send me the images you want to bake into cookies and I can make cutters out of them. Might take me a while, I’m still a noob at 3D design, but here are some samples of cookie cutters I can print out: http://www.thingiverse.com/search/page:1?q=cookie&sa=
