You might be surprised how many anti-gun people turn pro-gun after they get mugged, raped, or otherwise assaulted. It’s a lot easier to say “why would anyone need a gun?” if you never have yourself.
Interestingly, down here in not-freedomland I see very little evidence of this effect. I’ve been assaulted myself and it had no impact on my desire for guns to remain heavily restricted. And I remember a “Post-Port Arthur” (the massacre that claimed ~36 lives) special for the 20 year anniversary where the survivors and families of the victims were amongst the strongest anti-gun advocates I’ve ever seen.
All well and good if you’re trying not to get punched by Unity, but what if all of those other zombies on the train have different code words? As the old saying goes, a gun is quicker than a thesaurus, and has fewer pages to turn.
Also, it’s not just fear of zombies that can inspire gun ownership. Think of all of the gun sales inspired by time traveling cyborgs.
Considering that I’ve been shipping Sergio x Artie ever since Mel made that offhand remark about Sergio’s boyfriend, I’m not sure whether to hope that Sergio recognizes that nice teacher who wanted him to do well in school, or to hope that neither one does, to keep Artie from recognizing the hypocrisy of dating someone that *he* was researching…
Interestingly, Mell’s first words to Sergio in Lil’ Mell are “Hey kid”, and Sergio calls out Unity’s phrasing in this comic. I might be wrong, but I think this is the first time Unity has spoken directly to Sergio. http://www.shaenon.com/lilmell/?p=14
It could be a coincidence, but knowing Shaenon I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s deliberate.

You’ll pry this gun from my hands … NOT!
You’ll pry this gun from my hands,
When I’m cold and dead,
And all my blood I’ve bled!
So ev’rybody understands, you …
Won’t pry this gun from my hands!
That patchwork girl, she could punch … my skull in!
That patchwork girl, she can punch!
Yeah, she could crush my skull
(It makes a crunch that’s dull)
She almost made me lose my lunch!
That patchwork girl, she can punch!
Huh. So *that’s* how the NRA recruits…..

Repeat after me, Sergio: “Blueberry waffles.”

This strip sent me back to Li’l Mell. Again. Every time I reread it I discover something I’d missed. Brilliant.
Which gets me thinking: Would Sergio recognize Artie if they met again? I doubt Unity would, since Sergio didn’t ring any bells with her.

Is this still the same timeline where Sergio will get a husband, or has Anasigma derailed that?
(Because same-sex marriage is still such a big deal, I don’t like Artie/Sergio’s chances for interspecies same-sex marriage…)
Technically, he was researching Mell.
Why would Unity recognize either of them? At most, she’s cloned from Mell (the genetic material Helen sold to the government bio-weapon project).
Shared genes =\= shared memory
