What? Whimsy-Corp is evil? Who would have thought the big company gestalt entity could be evil?!

I’m still unclear as to why Aimee believes the sim’s Crown is the only copy of the Crown software. Wouldn’t the programmer(s) have kept backup copies — or at least notes for creating the code?

      Because it’s not sane science.

Github is for boring, sane software developers. Keep all data on floppies!

I took “lost” to mean “it doesn’t work and can’t be fixed”

      Commentary on the fourth strip:
“Taking normal precautions is definitely against the mad-science rules.”

They tested it on each other, and can no longer handle butterfly ballots and other complicated tasks.

The real question is what Lovelace and Aimee have been discussing while the other two were booted out.

      And Nick2, too!
      Gonna miss the stegopotamus, though…

What reason do we have to believe Lovelace didn’t get booted? Of the three, she was the one Aimee had the LEAST reason to trust whatsoever.

I read it as Lovelace just got booted back onto the internet.

Only three tween pop stars? Either Whimsy is spending not enough on sim R&D, or far too much on tween pop stars. Seriously, the damned things are like a dime a dozen around here; they’re practically vermin – hardly a night goes by where I don’t have to shoo one of the pesky blighters away from my rubbish bins.

I dunno, I’m sure the New Sync Boyz were expensive to program, even if their code can be fitted inside a flying maraca.

Well, it’s a fine balance. The more money you spend, the lower the budget drops, but the more you can differentiate them from the previous handful.

When it takes a team of 5 people to write godawful tripe like ‘Baby’ (Bieber), things are going to get expensive fast. Especially when the popstar has no hand in song creation and requires everything to be auto-tuned.

Darn, the world was saved from mind control tech AND tween pop-stars. What a shame. [grins wickedly]

Well, how much you spend on tween pop stars probably depends on how expensive they are to construct.

Or maybe she’s just referring to the R&D phase.

You only really need to do the R&D once, though; after that you can keep churning them out as long as you have the raw ingredients.

You have to do some ongoing R&D; that kind of vapid is a moving target. Much less after the first round, though.

I don’t think so – I think he was surprised to see what Aimee was actually like, and that she shouldn’t just be shut down like his virtual duplicate was.And I don’t think he fully understood just how manipulative and well, evil, the Whimsey fairy could be. But like they were saying above, she’s a product of mad science, and as such wants nothing more than to take over the world. Nice going, Skin Horse.

Duplicate Nick was not shut down. Nick Prime decided not to delete Nick2 after some discussion with Lovelace. It was decided that Nick2 would stay in in the VR and explore.

I miss Good Whimsy from the first arc, before she was corrupted by herself.

Let the record show that I called it back when we first found out we were dealing with a sapient corporation.

As xenophiliac and non-bigoted as I try to be, that’s where I draw the line.

Oh, cmon. Look at where we are with our metastatic non-sentient corporations and our non-mind-controlled voting publics… how much worse could Whimsyocracy be?

Never say that around Shaenon… She could arrange to add Mel Kelly to the mix, for example… a woman who once destroyed a universe just to send a message…

Automated trading is bad enough, though mainly ‘cos it ain’t that smart yet. Charles Stross’s novel “Accelerando” is pretty good on what could go wrong once fully-AI corporations are let off the leash. (Earth: a handy collection of heavy elements in a solar-energy-rich orbit…)

Please also note from the pages of Simon Green, there is also Abomination, Inc.; not just an evil corporation, but a group of fanatic zealots that worship it as well. Insert your own joke about the status quo here.

She’s not being evil here. She’d just like Baron to tell her what he knows.

What does Whimseydatter need with a big desk in her office? I’ve never seen her sit down…

It’s actually the memorial room to Whimsey himself. It was once just his home/ office away from home and office. Just like the ones Disney has/had in Disneyland and Disney World.
Effectively now just window dressing for the special tourists.

Plus it holds the office supplies, and gives her a surface to put forms on to sign them. You’ll notice there’s no chair, since she really doesn’t need that.
