Indeed, Sweetheart. Sadly, things have gotten to such a pass.
To other fans of Gavotte: it’s a simple way to spend one’s time, and by turns, amusing and satisfying. Some speak well of the practice, but populizers are
needed….
I now feel like the Skin Horse universe should also be home to a sentient vegetable marrow (what happens to a courgette/zucchini if you allow it to grow), who is cultivating small, moustached men.
I think all the men around Annex One could be described as ill-tempered. (Describing them as “men” might be a bit of a stretch, given their behavior at times.)
I realize that this is probably just a one-shot joke, but with Gavotte, you can never be completely sure if what she’s doing won’t be a Chekov’s gun for later. Although I can’t think of how a boxed Chris would be useful later.
Annex One is captured by Anasigma, and everyone inside is taken prisoner, but they don’t find Chris because he’s in the box; he goes on to retake the building for Team Good Guys.
Okay… this is just hilarious!
Agreed!
Not taking up mekeeping, then?
just one more letter … menkeeping.
*slow clap to everyone responsible for this*
I wouldn’t eat the ‘honey’ he produces.
Tip would.

The issue is less can he get out, and more how did she get him to get in there in the first place.
She’s a swarm of bees. She can be very persuasive.
In what way is she cultivating him?
To be taller and more ill-tempered?
Keeping him in that box should definitely make him ill-tempered.
“Can I get out now?”
“Not until you make more progress in your violin lesson!”
“I keep telling you, if you want more than one of me, I have to either get out of the box or you send Marcie in!”
…Sherlock Holmes retired?
Gavotte hasn’t retired yet?
“His Last Bow” Holmes doing some counter-intelligence work in the lead up to WWI indicates he is generally retired and doing bee keeping.
The 2015 movie, “Mr. Holmes” starring Ian McKlellan, DID have Holmes as retired and keeping bees.
As did a Neil Gaiman story.
I’m intrigued by a notion: Sherlock Holmes retired to cultivate bees. Maybe he cultivated Gavotte. She does have that British accent.
But, also, that might mean that all that about bees being space aliens and going to the planet Lovetron might be a delusion, too.
Bees being originally from another planet does not preclude the possibility of people cultivating them once they’re here.
The bees=aliens theory was confirmed by Dr. Who. Although I think their homeworld was called Melissa.
Close, it’s Melissa Majoria. I wonder if that means there’s two planets, and/or if Melissa is the name of their star?
Given the lifespan of bees, Holmes may have cultivated an ancestor of Gavotte’s. Then again, the accent may be British, but the name is French…
Holmes was canonically of part-French descent, so maybe he passed on some of his hives to relatives across the Channel.
Gavotte is the swarm, not individual bees.

So… this is… Beezle Bub?, Gavotte’s first cultivar?
This is the eminent Chris Sanders, nuclear scientist and cultivar extraordinaire.

But this one isn’t a cocaine addict.
