Ehh, I dunno, I think this comic might be losing it’s flair. In hindsight making fire doors more effecient to closing should be a priority for a fire safety technician, and he’s a mad scientist so yeah.
Pretty sure he’s a fake put there to mess with Sweetheart. I doubt a mad scientist in this comic would be interested in fire safety unless they’ve already been exposed to the Cure.
Personally, I think the issue is that he’s too dangerous for them not to have dosed him with it, as evidenced by the “Dead Dogs” and “Big Bad Wolves” storylines. He’s got to be a fake.
Yeah, I’ve been gradually realizing it was a prima facie error to blindly trust in a direct brain interface created by Skin Horse’s nemesis. But it seemed pretty reasonable to begin with…
Yeah, there’s no way this is anything other than that. I’m guessing that nothing in this storyline actually involved the drone’s physical presence being a real thing, and that everything we’ve seen has been a Goldbug construct.
It would explain why Goldbug would kick Nick out. He’s the one with the most experience in VR and brain-machine interfaces. Odds are he’d spot any oddities immediately.
That’s possible. I’d assumed that Sweetheart was really piloting the drone (everything she was interacting with being fake, but not VR fake) and he didn’t want Nick to go there because it would have no effect on him. But it could be a VR thing.

Bad, bad dog!
I deserve a swat on the nose
Bad, bad dog!
Left a mess that you’ll soon expose
Didn’t close the door
I was late for a date
I’m a miscreant, and my dad is irate
I’m a disappointment
An ungrateful child
I broke one rule, and forever I’ll be reviled
Captain, kill me now
‘Cause I left the fire door ajar
Captain, kill me now
I’m the most despicable by far
Captain, kill me now
Ignored fundamental fire safety
Captain, kill me now
Before I cause a catastrophe
Huh. I’m starting to think the institute works on a two tier process. First they condition your madness to be less… socially destructive (genetics->fire safety, destroying the world->destroying fallout boy), then they hit you with the cure, to make your transition from mad to non-mad (I refuse to use the word sane, since I relate to most of the madmen and women in this strip, and I’m clearly not mad myself. Nope, not at all.) gentler. I suspect that when given the cure, the Cap’n will become a heath and safety officer, and Dr. Ao will become some form of therapist who despises fallout boy.
Assuming that this is all real, and it isn’t one huge plot to drive Sweetie insane in the first place. After all, we’ve seen that Goldbug could control what Nick experienced, so why not affect Sweetie as well. But how/where does Moustachio fit in. Bah, I hate conundrums. They distract me from writing my Deceleration of Doom.
But it’s possible to slow down very quickly. For instance, when somebody lands on solid steel after falling from an immense height, they tend to slow down very quickly, and they are also doomed.

Wait till the doors close, Sweetheart,
When the flames go swiftly by,
No need to kill you, Sweetheart,
Don’t you cry!
We’ll meet the first responder,
Happy, you and I!
Wait till the doors close, Sweetheart,
Bye and bye!
If this is the Cure it has taken on at least some of the aspects of brainwashing.
It raises stress on the individual to the point of that individual seeks release from the stress in any form. The “correct” behavior is then selected by the brainwasher and rewarded.
Aaand a little bit of Hell, exactly as predicted. Some days I hate being right.
Can’t wait for “Ramshambler” and Hittie to find their way out of their trap and join up with her. Or at least accidentally break the server she’s connected to at the moment.
Some days you just can’t win.

If they make a “mess” on the floor does he rub their noses in it?
Which happens to be the wrong thing to do when house training.
I bet he whacks them right on the nose, too.
That’s what I was thinking too!
;>)
Evidence is mounting that Goldbug is messing with her mind.

That’s one possibility, but not the only one. This sequence of events could be real but engineered using the alternative futures gate.
Goldbug is all I AM IN UR SEKURITY UR FIREDORS R BELONG TO ME
Poodle Recall?
The whole facility is conspiring to gang up on Sweetheart now, I feel it.

Yeah, she’s being played. Adorably.

A “deceleration of doom” would be a short, fatal stop?
No, a prolonged one. Remember, decelerate = slow down.
But it’s possible to slow down very quickly. For instance, when somebody lands on solid steel after falling from an immense height, they tend to slow down very quickly, and they are also doomed.
You’ll notice that Moustachio was tossed into the robot dueling pit of doom, and has seen nothing but the other robots there…
It’s quite possible that Moustaschio – pardon me, Ramshambler – is at the REAL Institute. It’s virtually certain that Sweetheart is not
Virtually certain, huh? I see what you did there 🙂
Because, y’know Sweetheart’s in a virtual reality and stuff…
Did it work on Sweetheart the last time he tried it?

Yeah, clearly someone is messing with Sweetheart… their names are Garrity and Wells…
Curse them!
