Trash Art
Shaenon: Okay, okay, one more Trash post. Here’s the concept art Jesse drew of the characters and their ship, based on my stunning sketch:

Channing: Is anyone else distressed at the fact that the cook and the medical officer are the same person? I’m just saying, y’know, when it comes to excised tissue, waste not, want not.
Is the Captain a puppet controlled by four people?
I think the biggest problem with the cook also being the medical officer is that, if you get sick from the food, who do you go to?
I’m distressed by the facts that:
– Science was drawn so small in Shaenon’s sketch. Science!
– We only got eight pages of the promised 11-page preview.
Wait, the lemuroid is the *Science* officer?
Is this some euphemistic way of saying “they took away all the weapons they could find, so now we have to reverse the neutrino polarity of the deflector dish instead”?
(TUNE: “The Monster Mash”, Bobby “Boris” Pickett)
I had an idea for funny sci-fi,
I sketch some characters, by-and-by …
They didn’t quite look the way I thought …
I showed them to Jesse, and here’s what I got —
CHORUS:
The art of Trash!
The concept art of Trash …
Yes, art of Trash!
We hope will make some cash …
A pile of cash!
It isn’t porn or slash …
No naughty slash!
It’s just the art of Trash!
The engineer’s human, the doctor is too …
The lawyer and lifter are purple and blue …
The rest of the crew are equally odd …
The Captain’s a scaly octopod!
(repeat CHORUS)
Akuba screwed up somehow (what a dope!)
Now she’s on a garbage scow (Forks and Hope!)
To meet with the fleet’s elitest,
No one will allow!
The preview’s over, the work’s underway,
The novel will be for sale one day!
With drama, adventure, humor, and more
Available through the Couscous Store!
(repeat CHORUS)
I now have an ear worm and it’s all down to you, Ed!
Thank you! 😀
Logical after a fashion to dual the cook/doctor.
Assuming no ‘replicator’ tech or overly processed foods, Herbal for cooking/cures, as well as meat prep (requires anatomy), and plant health (nutrient balance) isn’t that far off from figuring nutrient deficiencies for sophonts (I am assuming aeroculture or hydroculture garden on board ship – also can be part of the life support by generating oxygen)
I’m thinking a combined doctor/cook could make use of alien micro-organisms discovered while curing the crew of diseases… y’know, culture them up and use them to make new forms of microbe-based dishes like cheese or (more important in this context, I suspect) beer.
You don’t want to experriment with using unusual cultures in food preperation. It’ll go on a rampage, and team up with the ships’s sound system, and next thing you know, you’ve got a really long fanfic on your hands…
According to TFOS rules we’ve got: three Humans, two Near Humans, one Not Very Near Human and one Real Weirdie.
Only two humans. One of them is just human-looking.
Hmm. Is the dude labeled “Ship” a cousin of Nick’s?
Judging from the tech, more likely a descendant.
Of course the cook is the medic. Don’t you want someone who’s good with knives?
We need to get this thing printed. I love me some “regular doofus thrust into a pirate story” plots, whether it’s Treasure Island, Black Lagoon, Firefly, or this.
The “heavy lifting” job, for moving stuff on and off the ship, is called a “stevedore”.
Oh, like Giles from Buffy.
AH-HAH-HAH! One of the great lines of BtVS.
I hadn’t thought of that line for a couple months, since I used it in a fanfic.
The Captain looks like he’s got starfish-style tube feet, which is cool. Plus, nostril-arms! (I do like me a good alien design.)
“Is anyone else distressed at the fact that the cook and the medical officer are the same person? I’m just saying, y’know, when it comes to excised tissue, waste not, want not.”
As long as she doesn’t make the soup from the same water that she washes the bedpans in I’m not going to complain…
Is there more? I’d follow this. What happens next?
What do the wings do? The thing is clearly as aerodynamic as a brick.
I need to read this. Where/when can we get more?
